OtterTail’s Pesticide Information and FAQ’s

The primary focus for OtterTail’s integrated mosquito management programs is to control mosquitoes while they are in the larval stage. Even though the overwhelming majority of the programs’ efforts are focused on larval control, it can also be necessary to carry out adult control, which is another key component to many mosquito control programs. OtterTail and its clients typically use many factors to decide when adult control measures are deemed necessary including adult surveillance results, residential complaints and potential WNV activity.

OtterTail’s philosophy with adult control applications is to minimize the impacts to the public and the environment while providing effective control of adult mosquito populations. OtterTail follows all appropriate application practices and uses state-of-the-art equipment operated by trained and educated applicators when performing adult control applications. OtterTail uses ultra-low-volume (ULV) equipment which is designed and calibrated to deliver the minimum amount of product needed to effectively control adult mosquitoes. ULV delivery techniques are designed to minimize environmental impacts at the same time they effectively manage populations of adult mosquitoes.

OtterTail’s adult mosquito control applications will be performed with a water-dilutable product called Aqualuer. This product is highly effective for the quick knockdown and control of adult mosquitoes and its water-dilutable formulation is more environmentally sensible than many other products that use oil-dilutions. The active ingredient in Aqualuer is permethrin, which is a type of synthetic pyrethroid. Synthetic pyrethroids are synthesized derivatives of naturally occurring pyrethrins, which are taken from pyrethrum, an extract of chrysanthemum flowers. These products generally cause rapid knockdown of adult mosquitoes and exhibit low mammalian toxicity while degrading rapidly in sunlight with little or no residue.
